The Mexican 1000 was actually the precursor to the Baja 1000, and it was back in 1967 that the first Baja desert racer took off from the starting line to begin the NORRA Mexican 1000. Althought SCORE now carries the torch for Baja racing with the San Felipe 250, Baja 500 and the Baja 1000, NORRA was the originator of off-road racing in Baja, and to celebrate this the organization decided to bring back the Mexican 1000 back. The event grows in popularity each year, and the dates for the 2012 event were just announced, as it will take place from Saturday, April 28th to Wednesday, May 2nd, running from Mexicali down the peninsula to La Paz.
