Douglas captures first victory
since 1999,
Taylor and Kincaid extend lead with six rounds
remaining
Fort Dodge, Iowa (July 29, 2001)—When heavy
rain and inclement weather hit Midwest Off-Road Raceway in Round 2
of the 2001 CORR EXXON Superflo Series on May 20, the round was
rescheduled to take place during the Kawasaki Iowa Challenge July
27-29. 60 points and three rounds of intense racing action at the
halfway point of the 2001 CORR EXXON Superflo Series can change the
season as six rounds remain.
After renewing
acquaintances with former (and now current) Crew Chief Ted Kendall,
Scott Douglas’ Pro-4 RANCHO Ford won for the first time since
1999 (Round 11-Indianapolis). Douglas battled current Pro-4 points
leader Rob MacCachren and his TrailMaster Ford both days, coming up
short in Round 2, where Douglas placed second behind MacCachren. In
Round 10, MacCachren took the lead from Douglas and was running a
strong race before he eventually fell out of the race.
Douglas’ victory in Round 10 was his third in 60 career
Championship Off-Road Racing starts.

MacCachren remains the man to beat in Pro-4. He
took the checkered flag in Round 2, giving him six victories on the
year. He came across bad luck in Round 9 when his right rear tire
went flat early in the race, but he was able to come back and
finish fourth. In Round 9, Johnny Greaves’ Forest County
Potawatomi Toyota Tundra and Curt LeDuc’s NAPA Chassis Ford
staged an epic battle. Greaves’ Toyota Tundra had the lead
throughout the duration of the race, but LeDuc was moving in as the
laps continued. Going into the first turn on the white-flag lap,
LeDuc attempted to go inside on Greaves. When he did, he hit
Greaves on the driver’s side. LeDuc was penalized, which
allowed Greaves to take the win.
Rick
Huseman and his Fabtech Ford became the sixth different winner in
the Pro-Lite division this year. Every time Huseman’s Ford
Ranger takes the track, it is one of the fastest, and he was able
to avoid bad luck and take his first victories of 2001 in Round 2
and 9, beating Jeff Kincaid both rounds. Kincaid’s Forest
County Potawatomi Toyota Tacoma powered him to victory in Round 10.
Kincaid’s victory in Round 10 was his fourth in 2001 and his
first since Round 6 (Crandon). With his victory and two
second-place finishes, Kincaid took back the Pro-Lite lead from
Rookie Steve Federico, 139 to 123. Rookie Chad Hord moved into
third-place with 110 points.
In the Pro-2
division, Scott Taylor’s EXXON Superflo Ford picked up two
more victories in Rounds 9 and 10 along with a second-place finish
in Round 2 to increase his overall lead to 46-points over Evan
Evans, 180 to 134. Carl Renezeder’s Lucas Oil Chevrolet had
two second-place finishes in Rounds 9 and 10, and a third-place
finish in Round 2 to enable him to move back to third-place in the
standings with 117 points.

In Round 2, Evans’ GM Hydra-Matic
Transmission Chevrolet took the lead when the drivers went 4-wide
into a tight turn one. When Evans sustained front-end damage over
the mogul section, Taylor closed in, decreasing Evans’ lead
during the second-half of the round. Heading down the front
straightaway on the last lap with both drivers full-throttle,
Evans’ Chevrolet beat Taylor’s Ford by one-half a truck
length. The win was Evans’ third this year.
Dan Baudoux picked up two victories in Rounds 2
and 10 to move into fifth place in the overall point standings in
the Sportsman 2 division. Debuting Dynomax as his new sponsor,
point’s leader Mike Oberg took the checkered flag in Round 9,
and finished second in Rounds 2 and 10. Ben Wandahsega took three
third-place finishes this weekend, and is fourth overall. Andy
Morter and Michael Savage are tied in second-place, trailing Oberg
171 to 121.
Stock driver Mark Kleiman moved
from fifth place following Round 8 in Bark River to second-place,
five points behind leader Eric Dawson by sweeping Rounds 2, 9 and
10. With his five victories in 2001, Kleiman tied Keith Steele with
10 career victories in the Stock division. Dawson was able to hold
onto his overall lead by finishing second in Rounds 2 and 9, and
fourth in Round 10.
Scott Schwalbe
continues to control the Super Buggy division. Schwable swept the
event weekend by winning Rounds 2, 9 and 10. He now has five
victories in 2001, increasing his lead to a monstrous 61 points
over Scott Powell. Schwalbe took over Chad Hord as the career
leader in victories (Super Buggy division) with 10 in 40
starts.
Mark Steinhardt moved into second
place in the Single Buggy division with a dominating performance by
winning Rounds 2, 9 and 10. His three victories give him five on
the year, and he trails point’s leader Michael Seefeldt 158
to 139. With a second-place finish in Rounds 9 and 10, Seefeldt has
one victory, six second-place finishes and three third-place
finishes in ten rounds of racing. With Steinhardt’s three
victories at Fort Dodge, he and Seefeldt are tied atop the Single
Buggy career wins list with 11 victories apiece.
John Huven maintained his slim Light Buggy points
lead over Paul Bort after ten rounds of racing. Huven now leads
Bort 136 to 119. Ben Andrews (Round 2) and Josh Hintz (Round 10)
won for the first time this year. Andrews’ win was his first
career CORR victory, while Hintz won for the second time in 33
career starts. In Round 9, Ben O’Connell took the checkered
flag for the second time in 2001, holding off Paul Bort and Huven.
O’Connell and Hintz are in a tie for third with 99
points.
The Bark River Off-Road Raceway
will host the U.P Off-Road 100 Dynomax Shootout August 11-12.
Rounds 11 and 12 will be a crucial point of the season, as the
drivers look to make a surge during the last six rounds.
