I walked through the pits and met up with as many racers as I
could. The first team I met was Jeff Hancock and David Jobski from
Arizona. They had teamed up to keep expenses down for the long
haul. Jeff had blown his Honda 250R motor the day before but
luckily had another motor with him. They had spent most the evening
before replacing the motor and were trying to break in the new one.
David had broken the throttle on his Yamaha Banshee and had to
replace it as well.
I looked a few pits
away and saw Shiloh Strunk, Jeff Henson, Kirk Schreier and Josh
Fink. They had pooled their rescources as well for the long drive
from Arizona and had an awesome display of quads, from the new
Honda TRX450R to the Yamaha YFZ450 and a GasGas.
Moving over to the Duncan Racing pit, the DRI crew
had the new Kawasaki V-Force 700 which Tim Gillespie would be
riding. Doug Eichner`s TRX450R was also on display. He seems to be
getting that bike more dialed-in at every race.
I spoke with Clay Williams from Baytown TX and Rod Bowyer from
Kerrville TX - they were the only "locals" that I could find. Both
of them were excited to race. I was surprised that there weren't
more local riders.
Lynn Prosser and her
father had made the long drive from Arizona and were looking for a
good finish on her YFZ. Brandon Ciptak was the only rider I saw on
a Cannondale. Nic Granlund showed up just a few hours before the
race. He had just done the "Quad Wars" show in San Francisco the
night before, taking the red-eye flight and landing in Austin at
about 7:30 am. A buddy picked him up at the airport and he just
made it to the race.
The Pro motorcycles
had just ended and the quads stated to line up at the start. The
start was a "live" engine start with the rider's right hand off the
throttle and on their helmet. When the green flag dropped, they
would grab a handful of throttle and GO.
They started the quads in waves, with the first line being the
ATV Pro class of Nic Granlund, Joey Aiello, Jeff Hancock and David
Jobski. The second line was Pro Production with Doug Eichner, Josh
Frederick, Mike Cafro, Josh Fink, Brandon Ciptak and Brandon
Wallis, followed by ATV Open B, ATV Production A, then Production
B.
The WORCS official started each
class in 30-second intervals and when the green flag flew, it was
Nic Granlund taking the holeshot. The second line took off with
Doug Eichner on his Honda taking the holeshot. After the start I
made my way onto the course and it was apparent that some of the
riders had some problems getting through the mud hole after the MX
section of the course.
Nic Granlund was in
the lead for the first lap but on the second lap Doug Eichner had
taken a 30-second lead on the overall lead position. Jeff Hancock
was no where to be seen on his 250R. I found out later that he had
stalled his quad in the mud pit and it took him about 30 minutes to
get it restarted. He later had problems with his left front spindle
but finished the race.
Granlund lost his
lead when he went through the mud pit, soaking his gloves and grips
with mud so he couldn't hold on to the bike. That was all Eichner
needed to get around him. Nic came into the pits and changed gloves
and wiped off his grips and things went much better after that.
Doug had one up on Nic, having raced on the course the day before
in the ATV Unclassified class. It really showed in his lap times.
Once out in front Doug Eichner didn't look back. He was like a
machine and didn't miss a beat, taking the Overall and the Pro
Production win, besting the field by at least 45 seconds over the
next finisher. That was Granlund, who fought hard and after 1:20
minutes of racing took the ATV Pro win and second Overall.
His buddy David Jobski broke a drive chain and was
done. I caught up with him later and he said he did have a blast
and the course was great. Joey Aiello was running consistent in the
Open Pro class all day long and ended up with a second place finish
in the class.
In the middle of the pack
there was some good racing going on. It was hard to keep track of
who was who because the numbers were covered with mud. In the ATV
Production A class Joshua Edwards ended up with the checkered,
followed by Lynn Prosser and Kirk Schreier. Production B class was
Matt Block from Falcon Co. Rod Bowyer from Kerrville TX and Jared
Kriese from Paige TX rounded out the podium. Ken Asklund from Round
Rock TX was the only entry in the ATV Vet 30+ class on his
Yamaha.
What a great day of racing! The
weather held out though we did have a few sprinkles. I witnessed
some great competition and there were no major mishaps or injuries
to report. There were a few encounters with those trees that just
wouldn't move out of the way...
I'm looking
forward to the next WORCS event in Texas, which will be in Decatur
in October. Thanks to Off-Road.com for allowing me to cover the
