2004 EWDRA Spring Hare Scrambles - ATV RacingRichland, Washington

Dean Waters
We recently attended the Eastern Washington Dirt Riders (EWDR) Spring Hare Scrambles event at Horn Rapids ORV Park in Richland, Washington. The EWDR host a Hare Scramble Event at Horn Rapids twice per year. This year, the spring race was the weekend of March 7th, and the fall race will be November 7th.

The ATV event was scheduled for an 8:45 am Riders' meeting followed by a 9:00 am start. Classes were 250/Open for 2 laps, 4 stroke and 3 wheeler for 2 laps, and IronMan for 3 laps. The course was a loop approximately 10 miles long, made up of primarily sandy desert terrain wrapped around the Horn Rapids property. The ATV's had a strict time limit imposed so they would not interfere with the dirtbike race to follow.

We attended the race primarly as a Test and Tune for Project Z400, which we just finished re-assembling after the frame gussets were installed. Any kind of a cross country or scramble event in the Pacific Northwest that we can get out on with our ATV is welcome. Justin Waters was the Team ORC rider of choice for this event. After attending the rather brief Riders' meeting which did not go over any of the race rules or expectations, the riders were pointed towards a start line. Beginner-level riders were to line-up in the second row. The start would be mass dead-engine format. About 50 quad riders lined up behind their quads, then had to run to the quad, start it, then take off. Justin got a mid-pack start on Project Z400.

Almost ready for next Best in the Desert event, Terribles Town 250.
Lap 1 checkpoint brought total mayhem. As the ATV riders came screaming in, they were greeted with a big STOP sign, then behind that was a line of volunteers who were all waving the riders on. It appeared as though the waving meant you were now okay after stopping and could continue. SURPRISE - That is not what the waving was about. They really wanted the riders to ride down the line of volunteers to the last one, who would then punch a hole in a flag tied on the handlebars. This may have worked if it would have been explained at the riders meeting, but with no explanation, many ATV racers had no idea what all the waving meant, so they ended up riding by without getting checked through on the first lap. After the first lap confusion, most riders figured out what was going on for their second or third lap. The top riders were turning 10-mile laps in about 15 minutes. Pro ATV rider Brandon Brown finished 2 laps fastest, then contined on to win the IronMan class. Officials, however, did not recognize the 250 Open class entry as Brown had been told initially, and at last news, he was credited only with the IronMan win. Team ORC rider Justin Waters finished the IronMan Division in 8th place. The course was rough and whooped out, but afterwards most riders said they had a blast. Riders with stock suspension were not quite as excited about the whoops, and finished the course tired and sore. The TCS / Holz suspenion worked like a dream on Project Z400, and Justin was able to just stay on the gas and power through the rough stuff.
Brandon Brown taking the win in IronMan Class, and discussing his disputed win of the 250 Open class as well...
Overall the EWDRA Hare Scramble was a fun but poorly-organized event, at least for the ATV Divisions. Expect us to be there again on November 7th and see if they get it together. The more ATV entrants we can pull to support the event, the more attention we'd expect them to give to briefing the riders, and keeping track of which riders are registered in which classes. We hope so. Unofficial IronMan Results

EWDRA does not currently have a web site, so we don't have any official finish information. We'll pass along any results or details if we get 'em.
