What kind of quad
does it take to win a grueling 500-mile desert race like the Baja
500? The SportQuad.com staff gets up close and finds out. We talked
to Kevin Avina of CT Racing, who prepped the 2002 Baja 500 winner,
ridden by Jimmy Stephenson and Mike Cafro, and proudly sponsored by
CT Racing, Temecula Motorsports, Avinaprep, JS Pest Control,
Maxxis, Douglas, MotionPro, Braking, IMS, Hinson, Tag, UNI, Roll
Design, Pro-x, VpFuels, Maier, Axis, DuraBlue, Ricky Stator, Scott
Goggles, and Graydon ProLine.

Think it's simple to build a winner? Start with a
2001 Roll Design Lobo chassis. Add a 265 cylinder with a CT Racing
National Pro-x interchangeable Dome and a CT modified Pro-x CR reed
Cage. Put a 37 mm PJ CT smooth bored carburetor on it with a Uni
air filter to keep the dirt out. Add a CT exhaust system to get the
air back out. Include a Baldwin transmission and a Pro-x/Hinson 8
plate clutch system with Motul oil.

Now add 50" Roll Design Lobo front a-arms with 12"of travel and Custom Axis shocks to provide the dampening. In the
rear you will need to add a Roll Design 18.5" swing arm and a
dual-rate remote reservoir Custom Axis dampener to get 13.5" of
wheel travel. | |

Fit the rear swingarm with a DuraBlue Eliminator
rear axle then add Sun Star sprockets, 15 tooth in the front, 38
tooth in the rear, and top it off with stock 250R hubs and a
Tsubaki Omega chain. Add Baldwin hubs in the front and CT billet
brake line holders.
In the front you will
also need to add a Roll Design Lobo steering stem topped with a GPR
steering stabilizer and Tag T1 Cr Hi handlebars. Install Motion Pro
controls and a Works Connection clutch on the Tag
handlebars. | |

Fit the quad with an IMS 4.2 gallon desert tank
and fill it with a VP C-12 and Motul 40:1 mixture. Install new
yellow Maier plastic and PC Carbon fiber nose piece, radiator
scoops, and master cylinder cover. Add a stator and lights from
Ricky Stator and you are ready when the sun goes down.

How do you get all of this to the ground? Install
Douglas Ultimate wheels with 23x7-10 Maxxis Razr tires in the front
and 20x11-9 Maxxis Razr tires in the rear.

Strap Jimmy Stephenson and Mike Cafro on your new
quad and you have the same combination that won the 2002 Baja 500.
Sounds simple! | |
