Cam chains require that a certain amount of tension be applied to them at all times to maintain correct camshaft/valve timing, especially at high RPM. Conventional cam chain tension adjusters require periodic adjustment to maintain proper tension as the cam chain wears. Automatic cam chain tension adjusters do not need periodic adjustment and minimize cam chain noise and wear.
