I give you what i know on rhis subject:
If you want the double case, and your xfer case shifter in your truck now
exits through the tail housing of the tranny, you need a xfer case where the
shifter exits through the top of the xfer case.
In this situation, you would use your existing case (in your truck now) as the
reduction unit, and the spare case you picked up as the new whole xfer case.
Got it?

Weikle's charges outrageous prices for used items but is pretty good with
replacment new items such as bumpers, fenders, and other body parts.
Weikle's seems a little shady at times and will often charge you whatever
price they are in the mood to give out. I once called about power steering
and was quoted $750 for the setup. I about flipped and said "ya....right".
I called about 2 weeks later and was quoted $200. I immediately gave my
credit card number over the phone and bought it sight unseen. When I
arrived, the owner realized that I was the guy he had quoted $750 and chewed
out his son-in-law for selling it so cheap. Now every time I try to buy
something from them he jacks up the price.
There is another guy right near Weikle's which I prefer over them. This
place is called Phil's motor works. Phil has much less, but is a very
friendly and helpful guy. His prices are right in line with what I like to
pay (cheap). His number is - (717) 938-3502

After a weekend of 4 wheeling on the eastern
shore of Maryland, I stopped at a local self-wash. Within 300 hundred
feet, my truck died. It took me a few minutes to figure out I had blown
an EFI fuse. I stuck another one in. I made it 30 miles before I ran out
of replacement fuses and I still had 100 miles to go! Well, I was lucky
that it finally decided to die in a city with a Toyota dealership. Too
bad they were idiots. First, they would not work on my truck first even
though mine was an emergency repair since I was not local. They didn't
start on the truck until the second day they had it. It took them two
more days to figure out the problem. Then they didn't even have the
replacement part. They just diconnected it so it would blow more EFI
fuses. Brown's Toyota had the part in stock (at the time, I lived close
to Brown's Toyota). It turned out that it was the valve just below the
throttle body. It has a switch in it that can short out. You can
disconnect this and see if you are still blowing fuses. If you are not,
then you need to replace this switch.

Did you order it from 4wpw'S? If not yet call Drive train Direct at

true tracs and 5.29's from them and the service was GREAT!!!! The sales
guys are Techs and not just sales guys.
Are you changing your gear size? When I did this I got new gears
bearings and true tracs front and rear for around the same price as
4WPW's. The benefit is that I got Richmond V6 Gears for the rear (the
Best for v6's) and superior gears up front (great gears too). I also
got the master install kit for the front and rear (bearings, crush
sleeve, etc.)
But if your not putting new gears in then your gear ratio has nothing to
do with the true Trac.
Hope I helped

Well, Since I've had about 6 replies for the '91 4Runner manual set that a
friend of mine has I've talked to him and he's wanting to get whatever he
can for them (he no longer owns the truck) SO what I'm going to do is
"auction" them off on the list - if you're interested, send me a private
e-mail with your bid, and I'll put you on the bid list. The high bid that
I have a week from now gets the manuals. (I'll e-mail everyone Wednesday
Feb. 3rd, afternoon CST for the outcome.) Hopefully this gives everyone a
chance to get a chance at a deal.
Here's the specifics - there's 4 volumes to the set
Vol #1 - Engine and Specifications
Vol #2 - Chassis, Body and electrical (the big one)
Vol #3 - Electrical Wiring Diagrams
Vol #4 - A43D & A44D Automatic Transmissions.
Volume #2 has complete transmission diagrams & testing /troubleshooting
information in it, so I don't know what the #4 covers that the #2 doesn't
cover? I'm sure they cover other years too, but the cover says 1991
4Runner.
These manuals look like brand new, and are still in the box from toyota
(there's no greasy fingerprints that I've seen ;-)

He had>>a welding machine and everything else we needed, so we went at it.>>Where did you rent a bender? Was it a mandrel tubing bender? I must admit>that is one tool I never thought of renting, but love the idea!
We called around the rental places and got prices ranging from $60 for 4 hours to $75 dollars per day. Finally, we called a local supply house that rents tools also. They were willing to rent us the tubing bender on Friday afternoon until Monday morning for a flat feel of $70.00. I don't exactly what kind of bender it was (because I've not used one until that weekend), but I'll try to describe it. (We do have literature coming from the manufacturer though.. cost is about $700.00 bucks for the machine!)
It is a hydraulic machine that uses specific dies to roll form the tubing to various degrees. Our die was for 1-1/2" tubing and 2" tubing. You place the tubing in the die and activate the machine to bend the tubing. The die then rolls clockwise to bend the tubing and counterclockwise to release it from the die. There are various degree marks on the machine housing to let you know what your doing. Simple to use but still hard to duplicate tubes with multiple bends at various angles. I'll try to get some pictures up late this weekend. Only then can you appreciate how fine the machine's help is. Remember one of the cages forms around the cab of a truck from the rock bars mounted at the frame. My cage forms around the dash (somewhat), hugs my windshield and then back to the rear hoop. I don't think we had any simple 45 or 90 degree bends :) In fact we used 90 degree elbows for the rear hoops to make a sharper 90.
There is one member of this list (Scott Floyd, I know you are lurking...) who doesn't really appreciate the work that went into these cages, but he does know how strange some of the bends were. He stopped by to watch us play for awhile. He mocked us a bit, but deep down inside he wanted us to make him a cage as well... Actually, he offered suggestions and ideas and watched as we tried to bend the front bars on the external cage. Those were the toughest ones we tried all weekend.
I'll post some pictures (not much work in progress stuff if any at all) and a brief write-up on the web at www.cyberramp.net/~siralf/cage.htm within the next week or so.
Our steel was purchased from an steel house that carries a good deal of excess and used material. The tubing we bought was some excess stuff they just received that week. That's why we were able to get such a good deal. Our steel prices were about 1/2 of the going rate here in the Dallas area. I used to buy steel (for a living) and it helps to know where to go for specific products. Especially in a large market like the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.

From: cuisine Subject: Fwd: Mystery-Update
Update: Just for kicks I re-monitored the voltage from the alternator.
Much different this time. At idle and at high RPM's it registered 13.35
at max. As soon as I put a load on it (radio, headlights, blinker) the
voltage dropped to 12.25 and kept dropping by .01 every couple of
seconds. This happens even at high RPM's. I stopped testing it at about
12 volts. When I turned the car completely off I noticed the volts
jumped up to 12.5'ish.
This would lead me to believe that the alternator is toast but the
battery is good since it came up after the load was gone. But would this
cause the dash to be funky and the RPM's to run high? Is it better to
get a high output alt or just reload this one?
<<>> OK, all this talk about idle problems and dash light problems must have
cursed me.
95' Runner with about 50K and the 3.0 V6 engine. Out of the blue I
started to noticing that the idle was running about 1200 RPM cold and
once at temp would settle to 750 thru 1000 rpm. Shouldn't it be about
400?
Once I started watching the dash more, I noticed the seat belt light
would go on and off at will. I tried everything from messing with the
belt itself to watching if it would happen at certain RPMS or if it was
cold and on and on. It comes and goes without rhyme or reason. No big
deal other than it is annoying.

In my opnion unless you know what you are doing, pull the 3rd member, take
it to the shop and have them do the install. The set-up in a diff is very
circuital. Especially the rear diff, that is the one use all. If it was the
front diff and all you did was rock crawling no high speed driving for
extended periods of time then it is not quite as circuital. If you are not
"right on" you will be replacing gears, bearings etc. very quickly. What
your current gear ratio is does not matter. Lockers and LSD's do not replace
the gears. Save yourself some heartache and have it done.

Well, apparently the LA Times ran a story saying that Santiago canyon and
three or four other creeks in that area have been closed to vehicular
travel to protect an endangered toad's breeding grounds. The issue that
needs to be settled by research is whether or not the toads actually breed
in these streams. The trail could be closed at least four years. Sounds
bad.

A good suggestion for some, but I have another suggestion. If you can deal
with the down time, and *want* to learn, set it up yourself.
For 5 years I have farmed diff setup out to other people, all the while
wanting to know how myself. When I set up my new rear diff this time - I will
set it up. People say that you can wear out gears, and that is true, BUT not
if you have the pattern right. I have yet to hear of a diff set up with the
correct pattern with the marking paste and go bad. On the other hand, I have
heard of diffs set to numerical specs go bad.
The friend who will be helping me has set up probably 15 diffs in the last 6
months with no tools - only the marking paste. That says enough for me.
This may not be for everybody, but I sure as heck am tired of having to pay
$$$ & work on someone else's schedule to get it done. Anyway, I could screw
up this set & install another & still be cheaper than having it installed.

I did the diagnostic check (connect T and E) and I got 11 blinks on my

throttle position sensor circuit, and the computer. Where on the truck are
these located and how do i know which one is bad???
Lately, my truck smokes if I step on the gas after idleing a while. It
doesnt continue to smoke after a while.
Also, I dont have a oxygen senor. Is that weird or what? Is it better to
get one?

I been fighting wiring a newer Toyota radio in my 85. Of course the
harnesses are different --- and I want Fader control for rear speakers.
Several list member provided help. Turns out my yard sale Toy radio is a
cheapie that was dealer installed with a unique harness! I just found
posted on the alt.autos.toyota NG a great link!
http://www.geocities.com/~autoinstall/techelec.htm It has lots of useful
wiring info (for all cars) like colors of radio wires, where speakers are
and size, depth of radio opening, color of wiring under dash for alarm
installation (including power locks, starter kill), same for remote start.
This could save hours with an volt/ohm meter when installing an alarm!

From: "Gregory J. Seitz" Subject: Brrr ... A/C time
Okay its 28 degrees outside --- the right time to think about A/C in the '85
PU! I have a 22RE with no air. One of list members provided detailed
instruction on installing a used one. I've found 2 used ones reasonably
priced (if indeed they still work) --- unfortunately they are from an '84
22R engine. I understand an 84-87 will work in my 85. But is the mounting
bracket, tensioning pulley and/or compressor different between the carb vs
the FI engine? Appears compressor on mine will have to be mounted low on RT
side of engine --- where on the carb it could be up high. Neither A/C is
local (isn't that the way it always is) so I can't just scope it out. Also
other than the obvious parts how do I describe any A/C unique vacuum dash
pots or relays? Is the A/C on a 2WD any different than on a 4WD? I'm in
No. VA --- anyone close by have any extra inexpensive A/C parts?

Subject: Re: Fwd: Mystery-Update
Some of the diodes inside your alternator are toast. Your alternator
puts out AC current and the diodes basically convert it to DC by causing
the current to flow the same way. (OK, all you experts, don't rip me too
hard- I said BASICALLY!) When you lose one side, you lose half of your
alternator output- this is why it will maintain voltage at no or very
load, but not when you load down the electrical system by turning on
accessories.
Find a good auto electric place near you- they should be able to test the
alternator and install some new diodes for you, along with whatever
brushes and bearings may be getting weak.
If you get a "Lifetime" alternator from the cheap chain stores, you will
most likely not get a unit as good as the one you will have by simply
doing a partial rebuild on this one.
The only trouble with many "Lifetime" warranties is that for the rest of
your life you remove the part every six months and return it to the store
for another one!

Much different this time. At idle and at high RPM's it registered 13.35
at max. As soon as I put a load on it (radio, headlights, blinker) the
voltage dropped to 12.25 and kept dropping by .01 every couple of
seconds. This happens even at high RPM's..........

just a tip, make sure to try it out every weekend or so (you know, just
turn it on, make sure the compressor turns on for only under a minute or
so, otherwise there maybe a leak...) for the first couple months, just to
make sure there is no problems with the install. luckily, i found out my
problems early (all due to installer error) and they were fixed. now,
have been trouble free for about a year and half now...

From: "Gregory J. Seitz" Subject: Clutch Job
Did a clutch replacement on my '90 22RE 4WD 4Runner last weekend. Thanks to
step-by-step instruction on List (Actually Barney's page). It went well. I
tried to also follow Haynes manual. It said to drain both transfer case and
transmission before doing. Of course last month I had just refilled with
$8/qt synthetic. I looked at both and couldn't figure why you needed to
drain them since you were only unbolting the drive shafts. Turns out there
is no reason to drain --- I lucked out. I also changed the fuel filter
based on fact that starter was out and it would be easier to get to! Was I
ever wrong --- that was a worse job than the trans! I had experienced
clutch slippage after only 73k --- clutch disk appeared a little black but
no shinny rivets. Pressure plate had 2 quarter sized blue burn marks on
either side --- probably a result of towing a 20 foot boat through 5 states!
Fortunately they were flat states cuz the 4 banger was weezing. Fly wheel
was still perfect! Now the clutch in my 85 PU @ 84k feels a little strange!
1 down - 1 to go!
