Ok so it looks like I'm going to get some free time in the next couple of weeks to work on a couple of projects. If I could just ask a couple of questions my time running back in forth to the store could be seriously reduced.
1. How long a brake line do I need on my rear brake system if I am replacing the old coils with a set of Old Man Emu's (similar to the Downey 1.5 to 3 inch lift.)
2. I guess the vertic on the Panhard Rod removal and installation of the drop bracket is CUT IT OFF the bolt. Yes?
3. When I go to the dealer to pick up a new set of Bolts and Nuts for the torrsion bars do I need Wedges (?) as well. (I live in an area with lots of Road salt )
4. Does anyone have any experience with OME shocks to fit this type of application. (currently have a set of rs9000's but they will be a little short after this.)
5. Completely unrelated to the lift....... I have a set of steel rims off my 81 pickup, what are the effects if I put these on the 4runner for the winter with a set of snows. Am I correct in understanding that the rims from a solid axle Toy will stick out more from the IFS vehicle but that since I am probably going with a 235/75 snow tire this won't create any problems (sorry don't know the offset and backspacing of the rims, haven't seen them in years they are stored away and not easy to get at.)
6. Last but not least... any recommendations on snow tires, I do lots of icy highway but still try to get into a cottage in the winter with no plowed road.

are still very loud. Can someone tell me if there is any trick to this
process. I am using the Haynes manual and following the procedure very
closely (not really much to it) but they just aren't getting quieter.

I just got my head gasket done and now my truck is acting funny. First of all
when i jumped in to it this morning it cranked over but it wouldn't fire. I
will see if I can explain what it did. Turn the key and hold it, engine would
go faster and faster until I let go of the key then it would die? It always
started great before. (turn and hold key about 1 second, then turn off, would
start immediately on the second try)
Next question, I now hear water gurgling when I start it, speeds up and gets
louder as I accelerate, especially when engine is cold. Sounds like it is
coming from passenger side (heater core?) It has never done that before. The
dealer replaced the water pump and thermostat with the HG.
One more. Is the A/C affected at all during the HG repair? My AC doesn't
seem nearly as cold now that they worked on it. Could they have bumped
something to allow the freon to leak out? Anyway I would really appreciate
any ideas anyone has. I would like to figure this out before the dealer says
it is something I did. Thank you.

I just helped a friend install a toy axle into the rear of his
Jeep CJ5. We have just a few questions. What exactly does the proportioning bracket for the rear brakes do? Is it needed
with manual brakes? Also, is anyone having problems using a heavyweight flywheel on their 22r's? My friend has a
recurring rear main leak and we have ruled out everything except the torque from the heavier flywheel. Any thoughts?
I have an idea to gain more travel. Tell me what you think or if there will be any problems with this setup. I was
thinking that you could replace your shackles with shocks. The fully compressed shock would work the same as a shackle,
pivoting back and forth. As the tire dropped during articulation, the shock would extend and allow the spring to drop
further than normal. I know that this would affect pinion angle during extreme travel but with a double cardan joint at
each end of the drive shaft it should work. What are your opinions? My friend and I fabbed a shock/shackle setup on his
CJ5 last weekend. We won't be able to test it until sometime around Thanksgiving, but I'll let you know how it works.

I think that a more simple variant on this is your basic buggy leaf
setup,
there is a lot downward of force on the spring,and that would pull the
shock all the way out. Before it got a chance to articulate the shock
would be bottomed out. there would be nothing to hold the spring up where

Trekker, converted by Winnebago (of motorhome fame). I know a guy with a
yellow one, based on an '83 pickup. The rear of the body behind the cab,
is fiberglass. I can't remember if the rear fenders are 'glass, or just
the upper portion, the canopy. It has a rather uncomfortable looking back
seat that essentially sits right on the floor, and a rear lift hatch
instead of the electric glass of true 4Runners. The mechanicals are all
left untouched as far as I know (same engine, axles, frame, steering etc).

With the 4" lift all you have to do is undo the pass. side of
the steering damper. This lets you drop the pan forwards enough that
you can reach in and undo the pickup from the block. All thats left is
wiggling the pan out the back under the tranny. Getting back in is a
little messy because of the gasket goop though. Try getting that stuff
out of your hair :). Thats the way i pulled the pan on mine and its
still not leaking.

You need to get one that is 4" longer, the stock one is too short for even the
stock springs.

Yes, on 4Runners cut it off and tie it up.

No they don't need to be replaced. I am on my fourth set of bolts and
origional wedges.

RS 9115 or 5115 shocks work great with 1.5" longer springs.

Yes, they will stick out just a little. They are 3.5" backspacing 6" or 7"
wide depending on model

The BFG AT's are one of the best ice tire I know of. For deep snow the Mud
version works better.

the more common swaps. The 2.7L would probably be difficult to get for a
good price, since it is such a new and expensive engine to begin with. Also,
if the old truck isn't EFI, you'll need an electric fuel pump, and possibly
mods to the fuel tank and fuel lines. The 2.7L has the intake manifold on
the opposite side of the engine as the older Toys (i think), so fuel lines
will have to be re-routed, and exhaust will need work, as the front
driveshaft may interfere. Also, you'd better get all the wiring, including
the EFI Computer, as these items are expen$ive!! Finally, you'll probably
need the tranny and transfer case, as I doubt the 2.7L will bolt to an older
tranny (though I'm not sure!). All of this for 150 Horses? You may be better
off with a nicely built 22R or 22RE with the proper gear ratios!! But, hey,
it may be worth a try...

I'm with Scott. The Tundra is one of the ugliest Toys ever made. I
don't even like the headlight set up on the 1998 Tacoma. On my 1997 the
headlights are recessed a little giving the front end that "mean" look.
Anyway, my vision is this........Tacoma with swapped in Tundra V8. Or
late 70s model Land Cruiser with the Tundra V8. Cool huh? You'll get
V8 power and it's still all Toy.

I just got my truck back after having the HG done and it runs worse now than
before. So I have a few questions I hope everyone can help me with.
My first question is I can hear water gurgling and it sounds like it is coming
from the passenger's side(heater core?) It seems to get louder and faster as
I accelerate, and it seems like it is worse when the engine is cold. The
truck never did this before, is it supposed to? I had the water pump,
thermostat etc. replaced by the dealer during the HG repair also.
Next question, when I tried to start it this morning it turned over but
wouldn't start. I'll try to explain. Turn the key and hold it. Engine turns
faster and faster but won't start? Always started great before. Usually turn
the key for a second,let off, turn again and it fires right up. Also seems to
be worse when the engine is cold.
Alright last question, is the A/C affected by the head gasket repair? It
seems like the A/C isn't as cold as it was before. Is it possible to have
knocked something loose and lost some freon? Any ideas would be greatly
appreciated. I would like to get this figured out before the dealer says it
was something I did, and won't fix it. Thanks

Subject: Aftermarket Cats
This question is for any 4 cyl. owners who have replaced the catalytic
converter with aftermarket converter. Do you still get the sulfer smell
coming through the back window under loads such as going up a hill? I am
planning to replace the entire exhaust system, header and muffler. I
don't think my cat is clogged or anything, but I just can't stand the
sulfer smell anymore. If an aftermarket cat will help, it will get
replaced too.

88 4-runner, so it is pretty light, but i need a strong mount. me and my
buddies have 12,000 lb winches and we like to winch them up the side of

Did you have the timing belt done at the same time? How soon afterward
did the truck begin to act up? I can think of a few possibilities:
1) Incorrecectly timed engine during installation of timing belt,

There is air in the cooling system. Most likely the heater core is air
locked or has a big air bubble in it. Here is what you can do (REMEMBER:
COOLANT CAN GET HOT...USE CAUTION WHEN REMOVING THE RADIATOR CAP!):
With the engine cold, remove the radiator cap and top off the radiator
if needed. Make sure the coolant surge tank is filled with coolant
between the "LOW" and "FULL" marks. Reinstall the radiator cap and back
it off one notch. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating
temperature then shut it off. Allow the engine to cool, and recheck the
coolant levels again. Top off if needed. Repeat the procedure until you
no longer have to add coolant and the level stabilizes inside the surge
tank. Coolant may bubble out through the radiator cap and onto the
radiator. This is normal as the air is purged out. Now is also a good

The A/C problem may be related to the HG work, but I doubt it. Actually,
with some mechanincs, anything is possible...

The proportioning valve changes the hydraulic pressure to the rear
brakes dependent on the load in the bed. Weather or not is needed is a
matter of personal preference. In my case, I have a camper shell, carpet
kit, tools, parts, dogs, misc. good stuff in my truck and I want all the
braking power back there I can get. Mine is disabled.
As for the heavier flywheel causing rear main leaks, I think this is a
bit of a myth. The flywheel is machined and balanced as opposed to just
having the extra 9 lbs. brazed onto the side of it :-) While it
obviously isn't balanced with the rest of the engine's reciprocating
assembly, it shouldn't matter all that much in relation to bearing and
seal wear. The rear main seal, in my opinion, only has the usable life
of a clutch (YMMV) and in my book, the rear main replacment is a
mandatory procedure in a clutch job.

It would help if you could have a way to lock the shock in the
compressed position for street driving. Otherwise, when you have to
stop long and hard the stocks would extend until you have your rear end
WAY up in the air....which would not help braking at all.
I have two concerns about the shock too....it would be hard to find a
shock that is short enough to do the trick.....and I think the shock
couldn't handle the side to side force, and twisting force the leaved
can generate. IF you got really twisted up, it would probably just
bend the compressed shock....possibly bend the eyes right off the
shock. If you where driving really off camber, the shocks wouldn't be
able to handle the weight of the vehicle pushing on them from the side.

I've got the V6, but I just replaced my can with a 2.5" CarSound
high-flow cat 2 weeks ago. If you're really taxing the engine you can
still get it to smell like sulfur...but it definately takes more heat to
produce that smell than it did with the stock one.

I have an '89 4Runner with the V6 and a 5 speed. The problem I'm having is an intermittent surge in the engine RPM while idling. It only seems to show up once the engine has warmed up (i.e. after 5-10 minutes of driving) and during cool weather (sub 70 deg F). I have no surge problems while driving at any speed, only once I come to a stop. The engine races up to approximately 1300 rpm and then immediately drops as if the engine has quit to about 900, then smoothes out at about 1000 for 1 to 2 seconds and begins this cycle all over again. Any ideas what might be causing this?

I do know the smell your talking of though. I used to laugh at a mechanic
friend of mine that bought a new Taurus back in 87, that car always stunk
bad.

I tied my proportioning bracket up so it was disabled, but my rear brakes
seemed to lock up frequently. Is it not supposed to do that? I definitely
got great braking to the rear wheels, but it wasn't good to lock up the
brakes on the pavement.

Make sure your idle is set at the proper RPM. I had kind of the same
problem and I found out that it was the computer fighting itself with the
idle to high.

If you look under the wheel well where the antenna is located you'll see
that you can remove the plastic cover, (technical term), protecting the
engine compartment. Once that's removed you'll see the antenna. There are
only a couple of screws holding it in. The wiring goes directly through to
the passenger compartment. Just pull back the carpeting.
