One other thought on this, have you done a valve adjustment
on the truck? I believe the Chilton manual (just got one
yesterday, best $14 you can spend) recommends doing this
every 70k miles. You can do it yourself, though on a V6 it
may be a bit time consuming. The Chilton book has pretty
 good instructions.
Since I've done valve adjustments a dozen times on my MGs,
I'd probably tackle this myself, but if you're unsure, a
good mechanic can handle this for you easily.
 YMMV, hope this helps.
 Cheers,
 Andy

I sent a message yesterday to the list with some of these
questions, but never saw the message appear. Appologies in
advance if anything here is repeated. I just bought a '94
4Runner SR5 V6 with 5-speed and am wondering about the
 following:
Spark Plugs: I've had good luck with Bosch platinum in the
past on other cars. Is there a recommended good plug for
 the 4Runner?
Plug wires: The wires on my truck are a spindly 5mm. Can
this be right? Should I leave 'em alone or get some good
 7mm silicone wires?
Front hubs: I've heard that changing the front hubs to the
manual locking type is a good idea to reduce wear on the
front CV joints and diff as well as increase mileage in
2-wheel drive mode.... True? Recommended manufacturers?
Tire pressure: What's the tire pressure recommendations for
31x10.5x15 tires on stock rims both for daily driving and
trail driving? There seems to be no indication on my
 tires. (goodyear wrangler whatevers)
Recommended upgrades: Anything glaring that should be
upgraded from factory specs, added, changed, just as a
 matter of course?
Performance tweaks: Any simple and inexpensive performance
tweaks? Not looking for monsterous horsepower, just a
smooth running, reliable engine with decent power. (yes, I
am doing a complete tune up and oil/filter change first)
Intake: I also assume that the K&N drop in filter is the
hot-ticket. But has anybody tried the K&N filtercharger
free-flow unit that replaces the airbox and attaches
directly to the air flow meter? What were the results?
 Thanks in advance!
 Andy

 One more thing on my '94 4Runner, V6 5-speed.
It shifts in to 4H and 4L with no problems whatsoever (4H on
the fly, and of course, 4L from a stop with the clutch
 depressed)
However, the truck is very reluctant to shift back into
2-wheel drive mode. Basically, when I shift back to 2 wheel
mode, (doesn't matter if I'm moving, stopped, clutch in/our
or whatever) it won't actually shift back unless I'm going
less than 15-20 MPH and I have to be turning at least a
 little.
Is this normal? I do plan to replace the xfer case oil with
Redline MT-90 (and the 5-speed too), but is there another
adjustment I should make? What's the deal?
Thanks in advance to all who can help!

From: Scott Muir Subject: Holy Crap and Injector Cleaning 22re
Just finishing off with the whole injector cleaning thing I went through last
 weekend.
I was driving my truck 'real easy like' because of a small bolt inside that I
knew I only had in finger tight. (a little 10 mm that anchors a fuel line
bracket to the rail...D'oh!) Well I took care of that last night and then got
to drive with my foot in it. I am really happy. Feels like someone added
another 1/2 an engine in the compartment. By this there was apparently
something wrong with my 4 banger.
I suspect I had a lazy injector. There was a little bit of evidence of this
with how easily the cleaner would drain though an 'open' injector.
Here's what it was like before. 5th gear was lame. If you put the peddle to
the floor, the engine would just laugh and say 'Oh you think so do you?' When
pulling away from a stop, I had a pulsing on the clutch that was like non-linear
drag. I was kinda worried I had botched the clutch job last summer and it was
finally catching up with me. At idle the engine sounded like it was running
smoothly, but there was a slight and regular shaking of it.
All gone now. Smooth idle. Clutch pulse gone. Actually pulls in 5th! wahoo!
(it pulls only a bit, it is a 4, but it pulls) After reading the stuff on the
knock sensor, maybe smoothing out the vibes has allowed the timing to advance
 more???
Engine lugging seems to have dropped a few hundred RPM as well. I sort of have
 a bottom end now.
I don't know if this is 100% injector related because I did clean out the air
channels too. The cleaner may also have unstuck a valve (not likely a problem
since I did the valvetrain last summer too) or seated a valve properly.
Suffice to say, this was well worth my time and effort. Can't wait to do the
plugs and the oil to see what extra I get out of that too. Anyone know what a
plug in a lean cylinder might look like??
 S.

It sounds like your are experienceing driveline bind. Hopefully you are not
driveing in 4WD on dry pavement. If you are not then just backup about 15
feet in a straight line and you should be able to easily shift into 2WD.
If you are using 4WD on dry pavement, stop now or you face large repair
 bills in the near future.

In the very back of my Haynes manual there is a color page with pix of the
most common plug problems (lean, rich, oil, carbon...) in the back of all of
the Haynes manuals, think they are in the Chilton's too.

Hey guys I hate to do it but I'm getting rid of my 1st love my '88 Toy Truck
I get the feeling that the dealer won't appriciate all the hard work I've
put into it But anyway it's not a 4X$4 it's more of a sport truck concerned
with speed. I built the 22r in it and it has a cam and ported heads but I
put the factory exhaust manifold on it But I have a Hedman Hedder for it.
Never used, (I lost the box) if anyone wants it or the truck let me know,
the truck needs work (body only) I've installed bucket seats in it out of a
CRX, it has a sport suspension, and 14X7 American Racing Wheels with Kelly
Sport white letters. It could be a real sweet ride I just can't afford the
the speeding tickets. Ohh it has a new exhaust a Thrush Glasspak w/ duel
crome tips, it's kinda quit till about 3500 rpm then it's kinda loud. I also
have a replacement clutch, it doesn't need it, I just have one here in case.
Sony CD player. It's not the best ride in town looks wise but I've beaten
305 Camaro's no lie. No BS here I'll tell ya straight up trust me. I figure
the hedder is worth $100, and that's what I'll take. The truck has real
light tailgate damage, hardly noticeable, but the driver side front needs a
marker light and mabey a fender. It's not real bad trust me. Well mail me if
you have any questions ohh 126,000mi and truck 20,000 on engine and I have

The truck is bone stock except for IFS truss, Borla catback, K&N filter,
and BFG 30x9.50 AT's. Most of my limited $x$ budget goes on my CJ-7, mainly
because the CJ is cheaper to build up. The pickup doesn't get much
because, um, well, it just doesn't break! My last pickup was a '78 20R SR5
which I drove until the frame rotted out.
Recognize a lot of folks here from the digests i've perused at offroad.com.
I've been on the offroad list since shortly after Stefan took it over, and
used to be on the Toyota list back when Todd Haverstock ran it out of

First of all....this is not a "normal thing" by any means. My 91 V6 Extra
has never suffered this problem. But, a friend did have this problem and at
the time the Toyota dealer rebuilt his transmission two times before they
tore apart the shifter and found the rubber shifter "seat" was broken.
So...try this, take apart your shifter and take a look. If the seat is
broken it's a $10 dollar part and a half an hours' time. If not, something
more expensive is and a lot more pain is in order. Good luck.

I'm lifting my truck sometime in the next 2 weeks and will have a set of
stock length RS9000 lying around. They fit the solid axle vehicles
(84-85). I got them from Tim Stuckey another list member, I think he had
an 84 mine is an 85. Poly bushings and no boots. There is a little rust
near the shafts but other than that they are a good pair of used shocks.
If anyone is interested let me know...$50 + shipping. I live in South
Carolina and like I said it will be a couple weeks till they're off.
On a different note I saw an add for a new cheap wax and it shows a Heep
Cherokee driving over all kind of small saplings and everything else in
it's path (trying to say how tough their wax is). I don't really mind
this but all it does is give the left wing more ammo to take away our
rights. If we can get all the companies that don't have anything to do
with the enviormental issues to stop shooting us in the foot then maybe
we could get somewhere. Just an opinion.

If anyone can help me with a place to go for some of the things that Im

At the moment I am running a k&n filter charger

 Subject: Strange Problems
 I own a 1987 4X4 P-U extra cab, 4 cyl. FI.
First, when I am driving along and I hit a little bump or take a turn with a
change in the road I hear a springy sound like a squeak.
Another thing is I wired up additional interior lights and routed both
courtesy switches to an illuminated on/off/on rocker switch. Before hooking up
my positive source for my lights on the switch, I tried the switch through a
ground to a light which had power running to it. When I switched it on the
lights I was wiring went on. When I switched it off they went off, but when I
switched to the other on which was not wired and the LEDs on the switch came
on without a positive charge. How is that?
 Any help is appreciated.
 Thanks

Hey there! My rig is a little over 154,000 miles young. I am wondering
what oil viscosity or type i will have the best results with. I have
tried synthetics. My engine doesn't seem to like them to much. I either
have good pressure at idle or good pressure at engine speed. I can't seem
to get both. Right now with 15w-40 Castrol Syntec, I have the later. I
usually stay in the conventional 10w-40 to the 15w-40 range where I have
good results. Can I do better??
A friend of mine ran 20w-50 in an older 22R and claimed to have "great"
 results.
I hope I haven't opened a can of worms on the oil issue. Also I don't
want to beat a dead horse. But, Any help would be great!
 Thank you !

Well I got my warranty rs9000 in today(bottom eye broke) and decided to
take the adjuster knob off and lube the piston and seal the knob to prevent
the siezing I've had in the past.Guess what?? Rancho doesn't seal it at
all...this is no problem but the local aftermarket gods say the siezing
happens from a lack of use(turning).Upon checking the rest of shocks I
found the pistons were rusted...I mean really rusted so how can a lack of
turning cause this I ask??? We'll see how much they value my business when
I ask for warranty on the remaining three shocks. To be continued.
On a brighter note I had the Safari Snorkel (which has been sitting in the
corner for months)installed last night,we did not get a chance to finish
plumbing in the fittings because I have to refit the stock air box in place
of the Downey street legal system which currently resides under the hood
but the fit and finish are great. The unit looks great as well, I'll post
details on my web page which is under
 construction.http//:www.geocities.com/Baja/Dunes/9776/

From: Chris Geiger Subject: Re: Oil?
Oil pressure is a function of
 1) Initial pressure
 2) Oil viscosity
 3) Resistance through bearing system
As the parts of an engine wear gaps between main bearings, rod bearings and the
crank increase slowly over time. The oil pump itself also wears slightly
reducing it's output a little. At an idle you see a lower pressure on an older
engine because the pump is putting out a little less and the oil can travel
faster through the larger openings in the crank bearings. As RPM rise so should
oil pressure until a small valve releases excess pressure back into the pan.
Most oil pumps can reach Mx pressure at between 1,200-2,000 RPM's. After that
only some of the oil goes into the engine, the rest returns to the pan. Normal
engines need about 10 PSI per 1,000 RPM. So at 2,000 you need 20 psi at 4,000
you need 40 psi. If you suspect your bearings are starting to wear you can
switch to a thicker oil like 40w (not 10w-40). This can also reduce (slightly)
oil usage through the rings. On engines above 200K that are on there last legs
you can use 50w to keep the pressure up. I have heard of people using 80-90w oil
in the engine to stop oil burning before selling a truck, but I think that would
 starve the engine during startup.
